French President Emmanuel Macron said that his visit to Russia would require certain actions on the part of his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. He said this in an interview with TF1.

Asked if a trip to Russia would be the next step after a visit to Ukraine, Macron replied: “It implies a precondition, a gesture from President Putin.” The French leader, along with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi and Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, visited Kyiv on Thursday.

Speaking of relations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the French leader assured that they “do not cooled off. According to him, if he maintained contacts with Putin, then these contacts were not hidden from the Ukrainian colleague and “sometimes even were at his request.”

Macron last visited Russia on February 7. After the talks with his Russian counterpart, the President of France, in particular, said that they helped to prevent further escalation of the situation around Ukraine. “Goal accomplished,” — he said then.

After the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine, Putin and Macron spoke on the phone several times. So, the leaders spoke on February 24, the day the hostilities began, then they called each other almost every week in March. The conversation took place twice in May, the last time— 28th.

In early June, the French president said that since December 2021 he had “lost count of the conversations” with Putin, talking with him “a hundred hours.” Macron urged the West not to humiliate Russia, which made a “historical and fundamental mistake for its people, for itself and for history”, which he, according to him, told his Russian colleague.
